Praise be to Allah.

Yes, giving ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) on behalf of a deceased loved one is permissible and beneficial. The scholars unanimously agree that acts like giving charity, making du’a (supplication), and performing Hajj or Umrah on behalf of the deceased benefit them. These actions are based on authentic texts from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah

  1. Du’a for Forgiveness:
Allah says:“And those who came after them say: ‘Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith.’” (Surah Al-Hashr 59:10)The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also encouraged making du’a for the deceased, especially during the funeral prayer, saying:“When you offer the funeral prayer for the deceased, then make du’a sincerely for them.” (Sahih Muslim)
  2. Charity on Behalf of the Deceased:
It is reported that a man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him):“My mother died suddenly, and she did not leave a will. If I give charity on her behalf, will she be rewarded?” The Prophet said, ‘Yes.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1388; Sahih Muslim, 1004)
  3. Sadaqah Jariyah:
Ongoing charity includes acts such as building wells, donating to mosques, or printing religious books that benefit people continuously. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sahih Muslim, 1631)

Practical Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah

  • Donating to a water project or well in a needy area.
  • Funding the construction or maintenance of a mosque.
  • Supporting the printing and distribution of Qur’ans.
  • Establishing educational initiatives, such as schools or libraries.

These acts allow the reward to continue accumulating for the deceased as long as people benefit from the charity.

Giving Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of the deceased is a noble and recommended act in Islam. It not only benefits the deceased but also brings blessings to the one giving the charity. The best way to honor loved ones is to combine charity with heartfelt du’a for their forgiveness and elevation in rank before Allah.
